History of Mother’s Day

Ann Reeves Jarvis cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. Afterwards she organized a “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to reconcile the Union and Confederate Soldiers with the help of mothers on both sides. At the same time activist, Julia Ward Howe worked to get June 2 nd celebrated as “Mother’s Peace Day” to promote world peace.
Ann Reeves Jarvis’ daughter, Anna Jarvis, was responsible for the official holiday after her mother died. Anna Jarvis started campaigning for mothers to have an official holiday in 1905. It was not until 1908 that there was a larger celebration when Jarvis held a memorial for her mom in Grafton, West Virginia. It was in 1914 as celebrations grew across America and President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making it an official holiday on every second Sunday of May. The apostrophe is always before the “s” in “Mother’s” so that each individual mother would be celebrated.

From 1920 onwards, Anna fought hard to not allow businesses to profit from Mother’s Day. She used most of her money filing lawsuits against those profiting from the holiday. In the USA alone in 2017, the total spending on Mother’s Day was reported to be 23.6 billion dollars. These were more recent events, however, a celebration of Mothers existed deep into Ancient History. The mother goddess Isis was celebrated in Ancient Egypt, Cybele and Rhea were celebrated in ancient Greece as well, with many other examples throughout history.
